Work placements are a key part of our three-phase concept, delivered in the Pathways to Rural Work programme. Moving the young people on from the rural career’s awareness stage, to the training stage.
The ‘Train Work Qualify’ initiative will offer, committed young people, in the NW Highlands the opportunity to upskill in specific careers through work experience and the gaining of ‘tickets’ e.g. excavator certificate, chainsaw certificate, skippers power boat ticket etc. This initiative will work with Lantra, Ringlink and other training providers to help meet the demand from rural businesses for qualified, young people who are work ready.
Our initiative is aimed directly at the rurally based young people, where they face specific challenges with transport and facilities and; through our ‘hands-on’ approach to practical learning we reach less academically oriented young people and those with additional support needs.
It is essential that the following are in place to deliver a positive work placement for you and the young person:
- A dedicated workplace supervisor for the young person
- An induction covering health & safety, orientation
- Clear rules and objectives
- A schedule of work for the young person including activities which allow them to observe different roles, undertake tasks, attend meetings and be part of normal everyday activities
- Regular guidance and feedback
It can be a week, a day a week, a few hours a week. For businesses talk to us about how we can support you. We will help you by;
- Ensuring the correct placement structure for you and the young person
- Liaising with the Local Authority departments to support the setup process
- Liaising with schools for bespoke placements Providing advice, guidance, and input throughout the placement process
- For young people talk to us about the type of work experience you would like.
